NEW DELHI, Mar 25: The Congress on Wednesday accused the Modi government of passing off existing policies as its relief package to those in need during the coronavirus lockdown.
It said wheat and rice at subsidised rate to 80 crore people announced after a cabinet meeting is a gift of the UPA government in 2013. What new vision does the BJP have, especially during the global crisis, it asked.
Pressing for NYAY Yojana proposed by the Congress last year during the Lok Sabha polls, its chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala pressed for cash transfer of Rs 7,500 in every Jan Dhan Account, Every PM Kisan Account, Every Pension Account besides distribution of Free Ration Through PDS.
He said over 500 academics and public figures across the globe have called for their govts to enact emergency basic income to save lives.
Surjewala also accused the government not increasing corona tests. Are 22,928 samples tested so far sufficient to know the real effect of the virus.
He said the government's claims of fight against Corona are far from the truth. He said the PM had announced in his first address to nation on Friday to set up an economic task force but not constituted till todate.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who is supposed to head it, knows it, a reason while the financial package is deferred every day. Putting people to all kinds of difficulties through 21-day lockdown but no relief to those affected, Surjewala said.
The government was also asked to disclose the current capacity to manufacture personal protective equipment for medical professionals and it is enough given the requirement.
