Anantnag is followed by its neighboring Kulgam district with 366 Covid cases. Four cases were reported today while as a day before (Thursday), the district had recorded 48 positive cases, highest since the outbreak of pandemic.
Both the districts, initially were Covid free. Later after the detection of first positive case in both the district, there were only few cases for a couple of weeks. However from mid April both the districts witnessed a sudden spike in positive cases. According to officials 80 percent of the positive cases in Kulgam, however are travellers.
Another neighboring district, Shopian stands at number third in covid cases. With 42 fresh cases recorded in the district on Friday the number of positives has mounted to 282. Initially only one village, Hirpora, had emerged as a hotspot in the district. However the contact tracing and aggressive testing by the officials contained the situation in the village. Later, the cases started coming from other areas as well involving over a dozen villages of the district.
Pulwama, the least affected district in the region has 121 covid positive cases, according to officials.
Though the district had been declared Covid free after only two positive cases had recovered initially but later when the people from different states of India returned, the district again witnessed spike in the positive cases.

Though Anantnag tops in the Covid cases but as far as the population is concerened Kulgam remains the worst hit. "Out of 364 total cases detected positive in Kulgam, 309 are still active which indicates the very low recovery rate," an official said.
