175 positive cases in 2 days worries, shocks health officials

ANANTNAG, Jun 6: With 64 more persons testing positive for Covid 19 in Shopian on Saturday, the toll of positive cases in the district has mounted to 415 surpassing its two neighbouring districts, Anantnag and Kulgam in Covid cases.
Till Friday, Anantnag had the highest number of Covid cases at 383, followed by Kulgam with 366 positives.
However, with a sudden surge in the positive cases in Shopian in the last two days, the district now remains the worst hit.
Initially, only one area of the district, Hirpora had turned out to be a hot spot where around 70 positive cases of Covid-19 were recorded. The spread of infection was, however, contained in the village due to aggressive testing and contact tracing.
Till Thursday, the district used to record few cases every day from different areas. However, on Friday the district recorded 111 positive which not only s shocked the locals but health officials as well. On Saturday, the district recorded 64 more positive cases taking the toll of positives to 415.
"Now Shopian district remains at top in Covid positive cases in the region. None of the persons returning positive today had any travel history which means and only few of them had a contact history. It is now clear that we are in the worst stage of community transmission," said an health official from the district.
Shopian district has at least 500 beds available for Covid positive cases in different healthcare facilities. However, officials say that if this surge continues in coming days, the district will face shortage of beds to accomodate and treat Covid cases.
"Reporting of 175 cases in two days is very scary and shocking. God forbid, if this trend continues, the situation will turn ugly and uncontrollable," the official said.
