CHANDRACHUD'S BENCH TO HEAR GOA GOVT'S REVIEW PLEA TO RESTART MINES

NEW DELHI, Sep 4: The Goa government's review petition to restart the iron ore mines lying closed in the state since March 2018 will be heard by the Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice DhanjayChandrachud, along with the writ petitions of the mining companies.
Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde on Friday disclosed that the review petition has been assigned to Justice Chandrachud when senior advocate Harish Salve mentioned it in the morning.
The Goa mining cases are already listed for hearing on September 9. The last hearing on August 28 was adjourned since the court had not received the CJI's nod to tag the review petition with other cases.
The state government had moved the review petition in November last year against the court's verdict in February 2018 shutting down all mines in the state, but its advocate-on-record filed an application only on August 17 to tag it with other cases for hearing.
Though the review petition is now flagged before Justice Chandrachud's court, the state government will have to answer a difficult question as to why it did not implement the court's directive in the 2018 judgment to auction the mines afresh and secure the environment clearance at the earliest. Had the mines been auctioned, two production years would not have been wasted.
