Defence canteens ignore PM's call of "vocal for local"

NEW DELHI, Sep 19: The defence ministry has taken no decision on using and selling through its canteens only "made in India" products in the light of the Prime Minister's appeal of "vocal for local," the Rajya Sabha was informed in a written reply to a question by BJP member K C Ramamurthy from Karnataka.
The reply is listed in the name of MoS for Defence Shripad Naik, though he is not attending the current monsoon session of Parliament but convalescing at home in Goa since after the recovery from Covid-19.
Giving details of the annual turnover of sales by the defence canteens running across the country for the defence personnel and their families, he said there was the sales of only Rs 3629.10 crore in the current financial year up to August while the sales in the past three years were: Rs 17,190.98 crore in 2017-18, Rs 18,917.23 crore in 2018-19 and Rs 17,588.27 crore in 2019-20.
