Phalke award to Rajinikanth

NEW DELHI, April 1: Legendary super star Rajinikanth(70), whose original name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, was on Thursday announced winner of the pretigious 51st Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019, days after he backed out from a plunge into the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the award to him here, hailing him as "one of the greatest actors in history of the Indian cinema" and his contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter as "iconic." He will be presented the highest award in the film industry on May 3, along with the national film awards.
He was selected for the award by a jury of Asha Bhosle, Subhash Ghai, Mohanlal, Shankar Mahadevan and Biswajeet Chatterjee. His selection by the jury was unanimous, which the government accepted, Javadekar said.
Speaking on the achievements of Rajinikanth, the I&B Minister that he is an iconic actor who has ruled the hearts of Indians for over fifty years. The Minister congratulated the legendary actor on the achievements.
