Sharp fall in covid infections and in active cases too

NEW DELHI, Aug 23: India on Monday recorded 25,072 new Covid-19 infections, the lowest in 160 days, with 389 deaths in the past 24 hours, whereas it logged sharpest dip of 19,474 active cases since June 29 to touch 3,33,924 cases.

This took the overall tally to 3,24,49,306 infections and the death toll to 4,34,756. Delhi recorded zero daily deaths due to Covid-19 for the third consequent day and 24 new infections while the positivity rate in the national capital stood at 0.04% as against the all-India rate of 1.94%, which was less than 3% for the lst 28 days. Maharashtra had the highest 145 deaths in 24 hours, followed by 66 in Kerala.

The day's recoveries at 44,159 far exceeded the infections while the recovery rate increased to 97.63%, which is the highest since March 2020.

Both Covid-19 vaccinations at 7.95 lakh and 12.55 tests were low due to the Rakhi festival and it being Sunday. The total vaccinations in India touched 58.25 crore while 50.75 crore have been tested so far for the Coronavirus.

GLOBAL UPDATE: Covid-19 is continuing to spread around the world, with 212,554,454 confirmed cases and 4,443,898 deaths across nearly 200 countries recorded since China reported its first cases in December 2019. The US remains the worst-hit country with 38,231,787 cases, followed by India, Brazil, Russia and France.
