Gunfight rages in Tral village, CRPF man injured

ANANTNAG, Jan 5: Nobody has been retrieved from the site of a gunfight that raged in Tral village of southern Pulwama district this morning even as the search operation continues in the area. Massive clashes broke out between civilian protesters and forces near the encounter site and Tral town.
The gunfight erupted in Aripal village of Tral in the early hours on Saturday after the forces following the credible input about the presence of militants launched a cordon and search operation in the area.
Officials said that as the forces after launching the cordon began conducting searches, they came under fire from the militants who were hiding in a residential house. The forces retaliated the fire triggering a gunfight. In the initial exchange of fire a para-military CRPF suffered bullet injuries who was later evacuated to the hospital.
The forces later intensified the operation against the militants and set the house where the militants were hiding on fire using explosives.
Soon after burning down the house, the forces started search operation near the encounter site to retrieve the bodies of militants, however, official sources said, no militant body has been recovered from the debris of the house.
"Though we have used bulldozers and fire tenders to douse the flames and remove the debris but no dead has been found so far," said an official.
The search operation near the encounter site was going on till this report was being filed. Though some reports suggested that the militants have managed to escape but the reports could not be officially confirmed.
Local sources said youth in the Aripal and Seer Jageer, the native village of top Hizb commander, Hamad Khan, who was rumoured to be trapped under the cordon made announcements about his escape from the encounter site on public address systems of Masjids.
Earlier, local sources said, clashes erupted at some distance from the encounter site after hundreds of youth tried to march towards the spot following the rumors about local Hizb commander Hammad Khan spread in the area.
They said that the forces resorted to tear-smoke shelling and aerial firing to prevent the protesters from matching towards gunfight spot.
Clashes also erupted in Tral township between forces and youth amid a complete shutdown in the area. Internet services also remained snapped in police district Awantipora.
