3 cops injured in grenade attack near Zero Bridge

SRINAGAR, Jan 17: Three police personnel including an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI), a Head Constable and a Special Police Officer (SPO) were injured in a grenade attack near Zero-bride area of the city on Thursday.
Officials informed that suspected militants hurled a hand grenade on a police party manning traffic near Akash Institute at Zero-Bridge in Rajbagh area this afternoon at around 2pm.
Three amongst an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) rank police official and two cops of the traffic police department suffered injuries in the blast. They were later removed to the hospital for treatment.
They said that the cops were busy manning traffic on the road near Zero-Bridge when the militants lobbed a hand grenade on them leaving three amongst them injured.
The higher-ups of police and CRPF immediately reached the spot to take a first-hand account of the incident while the area was cordoned off immediately to nab the militants.
Sources, however, said that the injured police cops who undergo treatment in the hospital are out of danger.
They identified the inured as ASI Iqbal Singh (14-battalion) JKAP who was admitted in the hospital with splinter injuries in neck, Head Constable (HC) Manzoor Ahmad who received injuries in both legs and Sanaullah with minor injury in foot.
The responsibility of the grenade attack ahead of the Republic day was claimed by Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit, news agencies said. JeM had also claimed the responsibility of similar attack on CRPF bunker at Palladium Chowk past week.
Confirming the attack, a police spokesman in a statement said that a police team reached the site at 2.00 PM following reports about the grenade attack by militants on a police party.
“Senior officers on reaching the spot found three cops injured in the attack. The injured cops including an ASI who were deployed for traffic regulation in the area were injured in the attack and were removed to the hospital for treatment,” Spokesman added.
He said police has registered a case in this regard and investigations into the instant matter were initiated.
Seeking cooperation from the public to provide information about the attackers to police, he said, people having any information about the incident can contact police.
