Jailed journalist among 10 charge-sheeted

SRINAGAR, Feb 7: A local journalist Asif Sultan was among ten persons charge-sheeted by the police on Thursday for providing shelter to the militants involved in killing of a policeman in a shootout in Batamaloo area of the city last year.
After concluding the investigation into FIR No 173/2018 under section 120-B read with 34, 302, 307, 326, RPC, 7/27 IA Act, 16, 18, 19, 20, 38 and 39 of ULA(P) and substantive offences Act registered at Batamaloo police station, police filed charge sheet against ten persons including journalist Asif Sultan for hatching criminal conspiracy and engaging in a militant act.
It may be in place to mention that a police constable identified as Parvez Ahmad was killed after militants opened indiscriminate firing on a police party in Batamaloo area on August 12 last year. After carrying out the act, the militants escaped from the scene.
Asif Sultan who was working as Assistant Executive Editor for a monthly English magazine, Kashmir Narrator was arrested by the police days after the incident took place in the area sparking off protests by the journalist fraternity across Kashmir.
A police spokesman in a statement said that investigation into the case has been concluded and charge sheet was filed against ten accused including a journalist and a female from south Kashmir’s Anantnag district before the competent court.
He identified the alleged accused as Mohammed Shafeeq Bhat and Waseem Khan both residents of Diyarwani Batamaloo, Bilal Ahmad Bhat of Kund Qazigund, Shazia Yaqoob alias Pari of Kamad Anantnag and Asif Sultan of Firdousabad, Batamaloo.
“After concluding investigation, charge sheet was filed before the competent Court by Police under section 120-B read with 34, 302,307,326, RPC, 7/27 IA Act, 16,18,19,20,38 & 39 of ULA(P) and substantive offences Act thereof subsequent to obtaining necessary Government sanction for prosecution under ULA(P)Act,” the spokesman added.
He further said the militants hiding in a residential house in Diyarwani; Batamaloo fired indiscriminately upon a police party leaving SgCt. Parvaiz Ahmad dead. He said the militants later fled from the spot.
