10 security men trapped after avalanche hits police post at Jawahar tunnel

ANANTNAG, Jan 7: One person died, two others were rescued and one went missing after the snow avalanche hit a residential house in Sonbrari area of Kokernag in southern Anantnag district. Meanwhile ten policemen are feared trapped under an avalanche that hit a police post at Jawahar tunnel on Wednesday evening.
Officials said that a snow avalanche that hit Sonabrari area of Kokernag buried a residential house of one Bashir Ahmad Qureshi. As soon as the news about the avalanche burying a residential house spread, locals of the area rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. They were later joined by the police and teams from district administration.
During the rescue operation, officials said, dead body of the house owner Bashir Ahmad was recovered and his two children were rescued alive.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Mohammad Yunus Malik said though two members of the affected family have been rescued but wife of the house owner, who was recovered dead from the mounds of snow, continues to be missing.
"I am personally monitoring the rescue operation but nothing can be said about the missing woman yet," DC told Kashmir Times.
In another tragic incident ten persons mostly police men are feared trapped under a snow avalanche that struck the police post near Jawahar tunnel in revenue district Anantnag.
Officials said a huge snow avalanche that hit the JT area competely buried a police post late Thursday evening.
DC Anantnag, Muhammad Yunus Malik confirmed the police post at JT having come under the avalanche.
"Ten security personnel are trapped under the avalanche at Jawahar tunnel and rescue operation is on to locate the missing personal," DC said.
However, police officials from district Kulgam monitoring the rescue operation said the continuous snowfall around Jawahar tunnel was hampering the rescue operation.
"The continuous snowfall in the area is making it difficult to carry on the rescue operation but all efforts are on to locate the trapped personal," a police official said.
