NUMBAI, Feb 9: Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya is India's third brother-pair playing the T-20s in New Zealand. Only Pathan brothers-Irfan and Yousuf- and Amarnath brothers (Mohinder and Surinder) have played the international matches together for India.
According to the current sparse research in the area, when siblings start playing the same game, usually there is comparison that begins at home itself, according to Vardayani Chitale / Gore, the renowned sports psychologist, who has her credit to work with several athletes including cricketers.
Krunal is two years elder than Hardik, but it was Hardik Pandya, who made international debut earlier.
"It leads to the younger sibling feeling jealous of the older one (or whoever has started the game first or who is better at the game). But if the environment at home encourages both the siblings to progress in the game without comparison, it can be a big motivating factor for success in the careers", the psychologist says.
"In such cases usually, both siblings are role models to each other- which is a huge motivational factor for their growth. They also develop their niche as they grow up- example- Hardik Pandya was a spinner turned fast bowler and Krunal being a spinner- both have different strong technical points. Hence, as they get older and firmer with techniques, jealousy reduces and encouragement increases- which can be seen in the siblings- Hardik and Krunal".
"Secondly, they end up being a good team by themselves. They can support each other through thick and thin when they are in the same team; probably become strong partners while batting as they know each other in and out. Examples being- Steve and Mark Waugh, Andy and Grant Flower or strong bowlers together- Shane and Brett Lee and Albie and Morne Morkel".
