JAMMU, Mar 9: A major tragedy was averted on Saturday with timely detection of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted on the approach road to the Line of Control (LOC) in Akhnoor sector in Jammu.
Police said that the IED was found planted on the roadside by a police party during routine patrolling at Nandwal chowk on Khour-Pallanwala road. “The policemen noticed a suspicious object on the roadside at around 10.55 AM and sounded an alert,” police spokesman said.
“Bomb disposal squads of the police and the army along with reinforcements rushed to the scene and isolated the area before successfully defusing the explosive substance,” the spokesman said.
He said the search in the area was still going to find if more IEDs were planted. A police officer said a case was registered and a hunt was launched to nab the suspects who planted the IED.
Locals said that the IED was concealed in a mineral water bottle and was first noticed by some passers-by. They informed the police about the mysterious bag containing the IED lying on the road.
The bomb disposal squad reached the spot and defused the explosive. On 8 March, a day after the grenade attack, a powerful IED circuit was found planted outside the Jammu airport, creating panic in the area. Security was put on high alert at vulnerable places in the Jammu division following the incident.
This is the third terrorism related incident in a row in Jammu after the grenade attack at a bus and detection of ‘an IED circuit’ outside the airport here in the last two days. The grenade attack that took place at the Jammu bus stand killed two persons and injured 32.
