MUMBAI Mar 9: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has reintroduced the policy of appointing a Chairman / Representative for the United Kingdom and Europe and the assignment has again been handed over to Sarath Abeysundera, an oldest Royalist and the proud owner of the Sigiriya Cricket Grounds in Leicester, UK.
Speaking exclusively over telephone from Colombo (where he will be based before leaving for England on Wednesday), he said, "my prime object is to bring some good young Sri Lankan cricketers to UK and play in Leicester in my cricket ground called Illston Abey Cricket Club so they can get experience of playing under different conditions and get used to play under English weather".
"Asoka de Siliva was the first benefited cricketer. Since then I have given 43 young cricketers opportunity to play cricket in UK and I will continue to support Sri Lanka cricket".
Interestingly, no other national cricket board is heard of having a policy of appointing a special representative overseas.
"I can’t answer for other countries but this system seems to work very well for Sri Lanka and it’s been going on for last 30 years so it’s not something we started yesterday and there are lots of benefits in this", he further added.
"When the World Cup is scheduled to be played in England this year, I will support my team in all ways", Sarath Abeysundera, who is also a member of the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) and the Life Member of the Leicester County Cricket Club, concluded.
Sarath Abeysundera is living in England for over 50 years. There he will be serving the Sri Lanka Cricket on a honorary basis.
