ANANTNAG, Mar 13: Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday shot dead an army deserter in Pinglana village of southern Pulwama district.
Officials said unidentified gunmen believed to be militants fired a volley of bullets on a 25-year old Ashiq Hussain Naik son of Mohammad Yusuf Naik when he was standing outside his home in the afternoon.
Left in a pool of blood the youth, local sources said, was immediately evacuated to nearby healthcare facility where doctors pronounced him brought dead.
Though a local news agency GNS reported that the slain youth was working in army and posted with JAKLI, army, however, denied the reports saying he was an army deserter.
However, some reports quoting Srinagar based defence spokesman said slain was an army deserter and had never taken oath as soldier.
"Recruit Showkat Ahmad Naik son of Mohd Yusuf Naik never took oath as soldier. He was enrolled on 15 January 2018 in Territorial Army. He went to Army's Jammu and Kashmir’s Light Infantry (JAKLI) Regimental center on 21 March 2018," said the spokesperson.
Naik, the army spokesman said, went on three days leave on 14th September and never returned. "On September 17 he was declared a deserter," reports quoted spokesman as having said.
A police official said after the legal and medical formalities the body of the slain was handed over to his family for last rites. "We have also registered a case into the incident and have started investigation," police official said.
