SRINAGAR, Jun 11: Even as half of the academic session has come to an end, the school education department authorities are yet to provide uniforms to the students enrolled in government run schools.
From the last several years, that state government has been providing free uniform to the students studying in government schools. However, this year, the authorities despite the lapse of half a year have failed to provide uniform to the students across the valley.
According to teachers and other zonal level education officials, the students come to schools either in torn uniforms provided to them last year or in home use clothes.
"As you know most of the students studying in government schools come from financially unsound families and receiving free uniform for their kids had come as a big relief for them. But this year half of the session has passed the students continue to await uniform," said an official of the education department.
The authorities are not coming clear on whether the uniforms will be provided to students this year or not. This uncertainty has also left the school managements in tough situation.
"Parents come to us everyday asking for uniform for their kids. We don't have any answers for them," said a Middle school teacher, Mohammad Hussain.
Another teacher, Tariq Ahmad posted in a school in zone Pahalgam said, "Authorities must clarify on whether the uniform will be provided to students this year or not so that we can ask the students to purchase it on their own. "This is an irony that half of the academic session has ended and the students still await uniform," Ahmad said.
Director School Education, Kashmir, Mohammad Yunus Malik said they have started distributing uniforms from Srinagar district.
"Uniforms are ready. We will be distributing the same in Srinagar first followed by other districts," director said.
Asked about the delay in distribution of uniforms, he avoided the question.
Director Samagra Shiksha, a central sponsored program for school education, Arun Manhas admitted the delay in distribution of uniforms but added that by the end of this month they will be distributing the uniforms to the students of at least two divisions, Kashmir and Ladakh.
"Distribution of uniform to the students of Jammu may get further delayed due to the ongoing summer vacations," he said.
