Day 94: Shutdown cripples normal life in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Nov 6: Normal life continued to remain affected in Kashmir valley on 94th consecutive day today amid internet blockade following centers August 5 decision to repeal special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of state into two Union Territories.
While markets and educational institutions continued to remain deserted across valley, public transport was as usual off the roads; however an increased movement of private vehicles was seen on roads amid fresh rainfall in Srinagar city and elsewhere.
Roadside vendors at few places in civil lines set up their stalls this morning however the fresh rainfall played spoilsport forcing vendors to windup for today. Amirakadal, Hari Singh High Street and adjoining markets were however deserted following grenade attack which left a non local toy seller from UP killed and forty others injured on Monday.
Educational institutions including schools, colleges and universities remained closed across valley as reluctant students continued to skip classes, teachers and other staff however marked their presence as usual.
While Banihal to Baramulla rail service remained suspended for 94th running day, internet and prepaid mobile service also remained snapped in Kashmir with administration silent on whether these service will be unlocked or not.
Reports said that markets in old city remained closed and public transport was constantly off the roads, however no untoward incident was reported from anywhere till reports last came in.
Situation according to reports suggested that shutdown affected normal life in other districts of the valley with markets closed and public transport off the roads.
Pertinent to mention BJP led government in centre abrogated special status of Jammu and Kashmir and divided the state into two Union Territories through Presidential order on August 5 this year. The centers decision was formally implemented in Kashmir from November 1.
