Srinagar, Nov 30: Dozens of roads leading to far flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) in frontier district of Kupwara and Bandipora in north Kashmir remained closed due to accumulation of heavy to very heavy snowfall.
The main road connecting border town of Machil with district headquarters Kupwara and Gurez, surrounded by Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) from three sides, with Bandipora also remained closed.
We have allowed traffic on Kupwara-Keran and Kupwara-Karnah roads after clearing the snow, an official of Police Control Room (PCR) told media over phone from Kupwara on Saturday.
He said a massive snow clearance operation was in progress on Kupwara-Machil road. Traffic will be allowed once the snow clearance operation is over, he said adding there is also still threat of avalanches.
Meanwhile, local in border town of Gurez protested after Friday prayers demanding early reopening of the road with district headquarter of Bandipora. Hundreds of students and others, besides some patients, are stranded in the border area, they said and demanded introduction of helicopter service till the road is reopened.
Authorities have put into service machines to clear the snow from both Gurez and Bandipora sides, officials said.
