SRINAGAR, Jan 11: The frequent closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway has led to the shortage of petrol and diesel in Srinagar.
Most petrol pumps are running dry. Because of the petrol shortage and snowfall a number of vehicles have gone off the roads.” I have a little petrol left in my car. Yesterday, I visited a number of petrol pumps but could not get petrol. The workers at the petrol pumps said they have no petrol because of its shortage due to road closure,” said Mohammad Rafiq.
He added that today the situation is even worse. “I will not risk going out without petrol in my vehicle,” Rafiq said. Similar views were shared by some others also.
Reports said hundreds of tankers carrying petrol and diesel and heading towards Kashmir are stranded on the highway due to frequent highway closure. Trucks loaded with petrol and gas are allegedly being denied passage into Nashri tunnel by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). These vehicles have to use the old road which are in a pathetic condition and are often difficult to use during winters has added to the problem.
Auto rickshaw drivers said a number of them are unable to earn their livelihood because of the shortage of the fuel. “I visited every filling station but did not get the petrol. The shortage of petrol has affected my badly as I am unable to earn anything,” he said.
Some reports said even cooking gas supply to valley has also declined. This is resulting in customers standing in long queues to get the new refilled cylinders at the gas agency outlets.
It is not only petrol and cooking gas that is unavailable in Kashmir Valley, same stands true for eatables, meat, and other products. The prices have shot up considerably in absence of any market regulation.
