LEH, Jan 13: Entire Kargil district and some parts in Leh district in Ladakh region received heaviest snowfall of the season in last 24 hours.
Most of the parts of the Union territory have been receiving heavy snow fall since last night.
Normal life in Kargil is disturbed due to snowfall. Vehicles are off the roads due to slippery roads. Vehicles movement between Leh and Kargil is also restricted. This is heaviest snowfall of the season. Though it has disturbed the normal life as of now, farmers in the region are taking this as a good sign for next crop season.
In the meanwhile, forty-one trekkers undertaking the Chadar trek were rescued after water overflowed over ice on the Zanskar river in Leh on Sunday, a senior official said.
The official also announced a temporary suspension of Chadak trek for the next two days due to inclement weather. The Chadar trek or the Zanskar gorge is a winter trail in the Zanskar. Traditionally the only means of travel in the area during the harsh winter months, the trail has become popular with adventure tourists.
“The trekkers who were stuck between Tibb and Neyraks camps due to overflowing of water over ice have been rescued and temporarily accommodated at Neraks village,” Leh district Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya said.
“All of them are safe and all necessary arrangements for their safety, security and evacuation have been put in place by the district administration,” he said.
In view of the inclement weather conditions, he said Chadar trek has temporarily been suspended for two days from Monday. "The decision for the opening of Chadar trek shall be taken only after field assessment," the officer said.
Met office in Srinagar issued Red Color warning of heavy to very heavy snow fall occurrence in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Heavy snow is being received in Kargil and Leh districts. Another spell is expected on 17th and 18th January. On the other hand, Snow dependent Ladakh is happy with the volume of snowfall this year. Farmers expecting the moisture and glaciers will be recharged with the fresh snowfall to ensure a bounty of crops season starting later this month.
In Leh and Kargil the snow also opened vistas for Ice Hockey and snow skiing.
