5 of family killed as car falls into gorge in Kishtwar

JAMMU, Feb 12: Five members of a family, including two women, were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge near Paani nallah in Drabshalla area of Kishtwar district on Wednesday morning.
The police said the accident happened when the family was carrying the body of a baby from Jammu to their Bahadat village in Drabshalla for last rites.
“The accident occurred near Paani Nallah as the driver of the private Maruti car bearing registration number JK07-2743 lost control over the wheels. As a consequence, their vehicle fell into deep gorge near Kuligad, Drabshalla of Kishtwar District,” the police said. The deceased were identified as Pawan Kumar (32), his wife Rekha Devi (26), Rita Devi (30), Kewal Krishan (37) and P Kumar (30).
Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Rajinder Singh Tara, while expressing grief over the loss of precious lives in accident, said that after receiving the information, civil administration, army, police and District Red Cross Society along with locals, rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation. “District administration provided immediate relief to the tune of Rs 30 thousand in favour of next kin of deceased family member out of District Red Cross Society and the amount was distributed by Naib Tehisldar Drabshalla Mohammed Ahsan Zaragar,” DC informed.
DDC asked ACR, Dr Amir Hussain to pay visit at the houses of deceased one and ensure necessary help should be extended in their favour.
Senior Congress leader and former minister GM Saroori also expressed grief over the loss of lives and said the repeated road accidents in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Udhampur districts must be a grave concern for the J&K administration.
“It is a situation which demands immediate measures and attention of all of us, especially the officers of transport, traffic police, National Highway authorities and Border Roads Organisation to put forward their departmental specific assignment of the causes responsible for causing accidents in these hilly districts,” he said.
