Police arrests prime suspect in Ghazali murder case

SRINAGAR, Feb 14: Police has arrested a prime ‘suspect’ in Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees (JAH) leader’s murder case from Karan Nagar area of the city a day after his body was found inside a mosque at Maisuma locality.
Dead body of Abdul Gani Dar aka Gani Ghazali 80, a former militant commander and senior Jamiat member of Rasu, Berwah in central Budgam was found lying inside a mosque at Maisuma locality on Thursday.
Sources said that a special team of police with the help of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage launched manhunt and succeeded to arrest the prime suspect from Karan Nagar area this afternoon.
The arrested person who is also a former militant has been identified as Ghulam Mohiudin Dar son of Abdul Gani Dar of Dalgate area of Srinagar. A formal case FIR No. 3/2020 under section 302 IPC stands registered at police station Maisuma.
Confirming the arrest, a police official said preliminary investigation revealed that assault on Ghazali was carried over money dispute. He also said confirmed that one who is arrested in connection with the case is a fromer militant.
“We arrested a prime suspect from Karan Nagar area this afternoon. Initial probe revealed dispute over money may be the cause of Ghazali’s murder. Since investigation is on we cannot say whether the arrested person is main accused in Ghazali murder case or not,” said the official adding police is near cracking the case and things would be clear within a day or two.
Pertinent to mention that Ghazali died after receiving a fatal blow on his head and his body was lying inside the mosque for nearly two hours.
Prominent religious figure and Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees chief, Moulvi Showkat Ahmad Shah was killed in cycle bomb blast outside same mosque and same locality nine years ago.
