A short film by Adil Abass
Carpet weaving has been the centuries-old craft of making exotic carpets and related products with the assimilation of designs from Central Asian countries and the Persian Gulf.
Having mastered the craft, it became an art and lucrative for the local artisans for centuries getting good returns in terms of money adding to the local economy.
The craftsmen imported designs and innovated their own to meet the demand in the international markets. Some of the finest carpets took years to make but they were revered by the art connoisseurs.
One such carpet was made over a period of eight years and a grand mosque in Saudi Arabia and dispatched in recent weeks after completion. Now some of the craftsmen believe that this art is dying because of modernisation and lack of demand in the international markets.
The younger generation is also not interested in carrying on their traditional craftsmanship because of low returns.
