Over 350 People Rendered Homeless As Landslides, Land Subsidence Hits Ramban Village

JAMMU: Over 350 people have been rendered homeless after their houses, about 60 in number, suffered an extensive damage when a major landslide and land subsidence took place in village Parnote on Gool-Sangaldan Road in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday night.

Landslides and land subsidence has been happening in this area since the beginning of the road widening project and carving out of Railway Line to Kashmir. The residents of Parnote village were forced to abandon their houses when the land subsidence started on Thursday evening and spent the night out there.

Besides the houses of the people, a power grid station that carries power supplies to Parnote village and areas beyond was also damaged. The power supply to the entire area has been snapped. The affected people have sent emergency messages to the local administration seeking urgent help in their rescue and relocation.

A report in Live Mint said that a major landslide and land subsidence took place in Pernote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Thursday night.

The report a former sarpanch Kalasha Devi, who told ANI, “Yesterday, at around 7 pm, first small cracks were seen on the roads. Right in front of us, the road sank almost a foot till 10-11 pm.”

“Our crops have also been damaged. The grid station has collapsed, and due to this, we do not have electricity, water pipelines are also damaged…,” she added while requesting the MLA to arrange a temporary stay for the people.

The Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, advised people not to panic and take precautionary measures to safeguard their lives. He is reported to assured the people of all possible help in this regard.

A team of district officials has been deployed round-the-clock to supervise the rehabilitation of the affected population and the restoration of essential services.

The road communication between Gool and Sangaldan has also been affected. The police authorities are reported to have closed the road for vehicular traffic movement after the road suffered an extensive damage.

JKNC leader and district president Ramban Sajjad Shaheen has expressed deep sorrow over the massive devastation caused to dozens of residential houses in Parnote Village of Ramban due to subsidence of a major portion of land along the Gool-Sangaldan Road. Shaheen extended sympathies to all those affected by the tragedy.

He emphasized the urgent need for swift action from the administration to provide immediate assistance and support to the affected families. Shaheen said that the government needs to come to people’s rescue and constitute a team of officers of revenue department, PWD and other stakeholders for a comprehensive assessment and compensation for the losses incurred by the affected families.

Sajjad Shaheen underscored the imperative need for resources and assistance to facilitate the rebuilding of lives of all those affected by the disaster. He has urged the local and the district administration to step up their efforts in rescue and rehabilitation work, ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected individuals and families.

Shaheen also said that our party stands in solidarity and support with the people of Parnote, Ramban, and will ensure that those impacted by this devastating tragedy receive the help and support they need to recover and rebuild.
