Behind the Empty Stage: Untold Story of Kashmir Theatre Artistes' Struggle After DD Kashir's Closure
Kashmir’s culture is rich, resulting in a unique blend of traditions, arts, music, and cuisine. Kashmir’s traditional music includes sufi music (Sufiana Kalam), folk music (Chakri), and instrumental music featuring instruments like the Santoor and Rabab.
And the most famous Bhand Pather, a tribute folk theatre style, is a combination of play and dance in a satirical style where social traditions and evils are depicted.
But In 2010, the Kashmir theatre scene was dealt a devastating blow when DD Kashir, a prominent theatre platform, was abruptly shut down due to a crippling lack of funds and human resources.
The sudden closure left numerous artists in the lurch, struggling to make ends meet. Funds owed to the artistes remain pending to this day, exacerbating their financial woes.
The once-thriving theatre community has been reduced to a mere shadow of its former self, with many artists forced to abandon their passion in search of more stable livelihoods.
