The recent success of the people’s movement in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir also known as Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is a testament to the determination and resilience of its citizens.
This uprising was a response to the entrenched privileges of the elite, and it underscores the imperative for governments to ensure the equitable distribution of public rights globally.
Unfortunately, in our country, citizens are often compelled to resort to strong and sometimes violent protests to claim their rightful entitlements. Language of peace is hardly heard in corridors of power.
However, it is crucial to commend those, who have contributed positively and peacefully to this recent movement, while firmly condemning and suppressing those, who have chosen the path of mischief and violence.
In democratic societies, peaceful protests, the protection of public rights, and the implementation of people-friendly policies play a pivotal role in national development. Regrettably, democracy in our country has been reduced to a mere tool for acquiring power and serving personal interests, rather than genuinely representing the will of the people. The recent people’s movement has exposed a significant rift between the populace and the rulers, as well as the broader political and democratic system.
The blame does not rest solely on the traditional rulers and politicians; the people themselves share responsibility. Political parties in the three divisions of Azad Kashmir have failed in their fundamental duty of training political workers and fostering democratic leadership. Over time, the leadership crisis has deepened, becoming a significant challenge for the people and democracy to overcome.
The majority of Kashmiris are not against the Pakistani state. However, the successive Pakistani governments have repeatedly intervened in the three-year tenure of the elected government leading to the appointment of three different prime ministers. This persistent interference to fulfill specific agendas undermines people’s rights and poses severe consequences.
Previously, the people’s weakness lay in granting representation to unqualified individuals based on caste, community, and regional affiliations. Such incompetent leadership failed to make the federal government recognise national interests, focusing instead on personal gain.
Now, the people have reclaimed their rights through their efforts. Moving forward, they must scrutinise their leadership and representatives more rigorously, ensuring that their support is well-placed.
The chaotic and violent incidents witnessed in the current movement can be attributed to a lack of effective leadership. Despite these challenges, the people in the region remain civilised, hospitable, educated, and conscious of their responsibilities. They will, sooner or later, fulfill their duties with diligence and commitment.
Issues such as shortages of flour, electricity, and sugar are internal problems, but when faced with external threats, we will stand united, proving that our priorities extend beyond mere caste goals to encompass collective and national interests.
The path forward for Azad Kashmir lies in embracing true democratic principles, fostering capable leadership, and ensuring that the government serves the people equitably. The recent movement is a step in this direction, highlighting the people’s resolve to secure their rights and shape a future aligned with their aspirations.
