Indian Muslim Body Seeks Progressive Post-Poll Roadmap for Jammu and Kashmir

NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), a prominent body representing various Muslim organizations across India, has called for a comprehensive and progressive roadmap to foster stability and growth in Jammu and Kashmir after the elections. In a press statement released, the AIMMM commended the Government of India and the Election Commission for their commitment to conducting free, fair, and independent elections. However, they raised alarms over allegations of pre-poll manipulations that could potentially marginalize the voices of the majority Muslim population in the forthcoming Assembly. The AIMMM specifically highlighted the impact of the Delimitation Commission’s decisions, which have allegedly favoured Hindu-majority regions by increasing the number of seats from 24 to 31 in these areas.

NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), a prominent body representing various Muslim organizations across India, has called for a comprehensive and progressive roadmap aimed to foster stability and growth in Jammu and Kashmir after the elections.

This change, coupled with the nomination of additional members, has raised concerns about the representation of the Muslim community, which comprises a significant portion of the electorate.

The organization argued that if the aim is to empower minority populations, such measures must be uniformly implemented across India to ensure that all minorities receive equitable political representation.

“The current formula, if allowed to proceed unchecked, will create a disproportionate representation that undermines the democratic values we strive for,” stated an AIMMM spokesperson.

“In a 95-member assembly, the Hindu minority, representing 28% of the population, should rightfully occupy 29 seats, yet the current framework does not reflect this balance.”

To address these pressing issues and ensure lasting peace, the AIMMM outlined several key recommendations in their roadmap:

  1. Restoration of Statehood:

– Immediate Action: The AIMMM urges the government to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir as a full-fledged state, respecting the local population’s aspirations.

– Rationale: Restoring statehood will empower local institutions and enable governance that is more attuned to the region’s unique needs.

  1. Empowerment of the Elected Government:

– Reduce Governor’s Powers: The AIMMM calls for a limitation of the Governor’s administrative powers to allow elected representatives to function effectively.

– Strengthen Democracy: This move is vital to reinforce democratic values and ensure elected officials can make critical decisions.

  1. Reduction of Surveillance:

– Scale Back Monitoring: The organization recommends reevaluating and scaling back excessive surveillance measures imposed on the populace.

– Promote Trust: Reducing the atmosphere of scrutiny is essential for rebuilding trust between citizens and authorities.

  1. Restoration of Political Freedom:

– Release Detainees: Immediate release of political leaders and activists who have been detained without substantial charges is imperative.

– Encourage Dialogue: An open political space is essential for healthy discourse and effective conflict resolution.

  1. Freedom of the Press:

– Lift Media Restrictions: The AIMMM demands the removal of limitations on local and national media.

– Ensure Transparency: A free press is crucial for accountability and an informed citizenry.

  1. Socio-Economic Development:

– Invest in Infrastructure: Prioritizing projects that generate employment and enhance living standards for all communities is vital.

– Inclusive Growth: Economic development initiatives must benefit all groups to foster unity and progress.

  1. Community Engagement:

– Promote Civil Society Initiatives: Support for organizations dedicated to social cohesion and peace-building is necessary.

– Educational Programs: Encouraging educational exchanges can bridge cultural and communal divides.

The AIMMM said it remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir and believes that the implementation of these recommendations is crucial for creating a harmonious and prosperous future.

“We envision a Jammu and Kashmir where every individual enjoys fundamental rights and freedoms, democratic institutions operate without undue interference, and communities coexist peacefully,” the spokesperson added.

The organization also emphasized that constructive dialogue and collaboration are key to overcoming the challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir today.
