Sugra Barkati, daughter of separatist leader Sarjan Barkati, gave a video interview about her father’s participation in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024. Sarjan, who played a significant role in the 2016 Kashmir protests, is running for two seats – Ganderbal and Beerwah in Kashmir. Currently, in jail, he has shifted from separatist activities to mainstream politics. Sugra alongwith her 12-year-old brother, is actively campaigning for their father. This follows their mother’s arrest a few years ago. Sugra shared her family’s motivations and hopes for the upcoming elections in the interview.
Following Burhan Wani’s killing in July 2016, Sarjan Barkati played a role in Kashmir protests. He was arrested and detained in 2016 itself. Kashmir observed strikes and a complete shutdown for about five months.
She filed the nomination papers in two assembly constituencies because his papers were rejected in a segment at the first instance. It was on his father’s suggestion that she filed his nomination papers from two other constituencies.
