The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections in 2024 are significant, as they are being conducted after a decade. The last elections in 2014 led to a coalition government between the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and the Jammu & Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as Chief Minister in 2015. Following his death in January 2016, his daughter Mehbooba Mufti took over as Chief Minister.

However, the coalition government faced challenges, leading to Mehbooba Mufti’s resignation on June 19, 2018, after the BJP withdrew its support. Since then, Jammu and Kashmir has been under Governor’s Rule.

A major turning point came on August 5, 2019, with the promulgation of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. This act resulted in the state’s bifurcation into two Union Territories—Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir—and the withdrawal of its special status.

Since then, Lieutenant Governors have been appointed in both territories, holding more significant powers.

The upcoming elections are crucial, as they will be the first since the region’s reorganization and the removal of its special status. Only J&K UT is having Legislative Assembly while Ladakh is without a Legislative Assembly after it was bifurcated and made a separate UT.
