The National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance has secured a decisive victory in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, held after a decade and following the bifurcation of the state. Out of 90 seats, the NC-Congress alliance led in 49, with NC claiming 42 seats, Congress six, and CPI(M) one.
While the Valley gave a clear mandate to the alliance, in Jammu the BJP took control of the majority of the seats but the verdict is split along sub-regional lines.
In the Kashmir Valley, the NC achieved its best performance since 1996, winning 35 out of 47 seats, while Congress gained five, CPI(M) one, and PDP just three. The NC-Congress alliance’s clear win reflects the region’s overwhelming support, dispelling concerns of a fractured verdict.
In Jammu, the BJP excelled by winning 29 out of 43 seats, maintaining a similar percentage of seats compared to previous elections, though its overall vote share saw a slight decline in urban areas. The Congress’s performance was disappointing, losing ground in both Jammu and Kashmir regions.
