Hell on Earth: Srinagar's Mountain Of Stink

Residents Struggle with Unbearable Stench from Srinagar's Waste Pile

The Achan waste dump in Srinagar represents a significant environmental and public health crisis. The once pristine wetland was turned into the city's only landfill in 1983.

The unscientific dumping of mixed waste without proper treatment has created serious health hazards for the 250 households living nearby. The emission of methane gas and contamination of groundwater further compounds these health risks.

Despite a 2007 court order to close the site and numerous protests by residents, the dump continues to operate. The Achan dump stands as a stark example of environmental degradation and governmental apathy, severely impacting the quality of life for Srinagar's residents.
