
SRINAGAR: The security authorities have sounded a high alert in Kashmir Valley following the attack on two Punjabi workers by suspected militants in Srinagar city, the summer capital city, on Wednesday evening.
An official told Srinagar based news gathering agencies that security has been strengthened throughout Kashmir Valley, with extra surveillance on the highways and peripheral roads. Security checking has been intensified with additional points established at various locations, especially at the entry and exit points of the city and other districts.
The official is reported to have said that security forces are conducting random vehicle checks and frisking individuals to thwart any subversive activities.
The official said that authorities have urged security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that law and order is maintained, preserving peace in the region.
A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the attackers who targeted the residents of Punjab, the official added. It was after a long time that targeted killing of workers from outside Jammu and Kashmir have taken place.
On Wednesday evening, Amritpal Singh, a 31-year-old from Amritsar, Punjab, was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar. His colleague, 25-year-old Rohit, sustained severe injuries, and succumbed at a tertiary care hospital in Srinagar on Thursday morning.
Residents throughout Kashmir Valley have strongly condemned the attack and are calling for decisive action against the gunmen responsible for the killings.
Protests and candlelight vigils have been held in various locations across north, south, and central Kashmir, including Shopian, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam, Anantnag, and Srinagar.
Previous reports said that suspected militants shot dead one person and injured another in Krafali Mohalla Shal Kadal area of Srinagar district on Wednesday evening.
Srinagar-based news agency GNS quoted a top police officer as saying that today evening militants fired upon two persons from point blank range, resulting in on the spot death of one and causing injuries to another.
The injured person, the police officer said, has been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
