Next J&K CM will be like an ‘Elevated Mayor’, says Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain, on J&K Assembly Polls 2024

Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain feels that the new Chief Minister of J&K will be an elevated Mayor of a Municipal Corporation, who will not be enjoying the powers of a state. J&K was downgraded from a state to a Union Territory and bifurcated into two parts, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir UTs. J&K will have a Legislative Assembly while Ladakh will be without any Assembly.

Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain, is a well-known political analyst from Jammu and Kashmir. He did his LL’M and PhD from Aligarh Muslim University and taught International Relations and Law in Malaysian University. He has specialised in Human Rights and International Law. He taught at the University of Kashmir, Srinagar, and retired as Dean of Law from Central University, Kashmir. He has been a keen observer of political developments in Jammu and Kashmir.

He feels that the new Chief Minister of J&K will be an elevated Mayor of a Municipal Corporation, who will not be enjoying the powers of a state. J&K was downgraded from a state to a Union Territory and bifurcated into two parts, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir UTs.

J&K will have a Legislative Assembly while Ladakh will be without any Assembly. This will be for the first time in the history of J&K that Ladakh will have no elected representative in the Legislative Assembly or a nominated member in the Legislative Council.

Previously, Ladakh had four elected MLAs and at least two MLCs from Leh and Kargil districts, respectively, before August 5, 2019.
