India's War On Fake News: How Disinformation Became India's #1 Threat | Fact Vs Fiction
Why has fake news become an industry in India? A 15-year-long investigation unearthed 750 fake media outlets operating from India and spanning across 119 countries with 550 domain names spreading ...fake news. Its impact on the country is devastating. A 2023 Statista Survey reveals disinformation was ranked as the number one risk threatening India, outranking infectious diseases, illicit economic activity and inequality.
Why has fake news transformed into an industry in India? We traverse India to meet internet trolls, to understand the financial and ideological motives that compel them into becoming agents of misinformation. We also meet technologists, fact-checkers and grassroots digital activists who are fostering digital literacy and preventing people from falling prey to what commentators have called as an “infodemic”.
